ECS 101: What You Need To Know

ECS, or Elevate conditioned serum, is an easy-to-use lab service orthobiologic. Ardent Equine designed this service to provide equine veterinarians an option to provide Regenerative Medicine without needing equipment or processing, saving them time and cost. Check out the information below to learn more about ECS and how you can start utilizing it for your equine patients!

What is ECS?

Elevate Conditioned Serum or ECS, is an autologous blood-based lab service by mail designed for the busy veterinarian. ECS is a serum that contains concentrated amounts of cytokines and growth factors such as IL-1RA, IL-10, IL-4, and TGF-β that mediate inflammation and promote tissue healing. The service can yield up to 40 doses from a 450mL blood bag. These doses can be stored frozen and provide a treatment strategy rather than a one-time treatment. Samples are processed in ISO 5 hoods and tested for sterility prior to release.

How does ECS work?

ECS is an autologous blood-based biologic that utilizes your horse’s own blood for the management of pain and inflammation. The injectable solution contains regenerative and anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors. These proteins play a significant role in the healing, repair, and regeneration of damaged tissue.

What is the process for ECS?

No equipment or training is needed, just a collection kit provided by Ardent! Our ECS Collection Cooler is free to keep on hand and it contains a blood collection bag, ice packs, and next-day air UPS return label. After shipping Ardent the collection kit with your blood sample, veterinarians will receive their final ECS product 72 hours from the initial blood draw. We can provide up to 160 ml of final volume and will ship the ECS in syringes at 4 ml each. Any remaining ECS that is not initially used can be stored in a standard freezer for up to a year.

ECS Easy Steps: 1. Receive our ECS cooler 2. Draw blood with our included blood bag 3. Ship it back to Ardent 4. We process the blood in our lab 5. The sample is sent back to the veterinarian 6. Administer as needed, store remainder in freezer

What can ECS be used for?

ECS is most commonly used for osteoarthritis but can be used for any musculoskeletal injury including tendons and ligaments.

Why should I consider ECS?

  • Our trained technicians will perform all biologic processing at Ardent Equine’s laboratory, saving you time.

  • Our processing method prevents the incidence of hemolysis and eliminates all red blood cells from the final product, so you receive a beautifully golden sample every time.

  • ECS is processed under ISO 5 fume hoods and sterility testing is performed to ensure that the sample is safe for injection.

  • We will send back your choice of 80 ml or 160 ml (aliquoted at 4 ml in syringes) of the final product. Doses can be stored for 12 months in a standard freezer for future use
