What is ECS?

Elevate Conditioned Serum or ECS, is an autologous blood based lab service by mail designed for the busy veterinarian. ECS is a serum that contains concentrated amounts cytokines and growth factors such as IL-1RA, IL-10, IL-4, and TGF-β  that mediate inflammation and promote tissue healing. The service can yield up to 40 doses from a 450mL blood bag. These doses can be stored frozen and provide a treatment strategy rather than a one time treatment. Samples are processed in ISO 5 hoods and tested for sterility prior to release.

The Process - How ECS Works

ECS was designed to be convenient for the busy equine veterinarian. This lab service is an Ardent Equine lab service which allows the veterinarian to simply draw blood and administer ECS while we do all of the processing. First, the veterinarian will receive the ECS cooler and then draw blood from their equine patient using our included blood bag. Next, the veterinarian will ship the sample back to Ardent where we will process the blood in our lab. We will then mail the back the ECS where it is then ready to administer to the patient by the veterinarian.

The Science Behind ECS

Endogenous pro-inflammatory cytokines play a significant role in the progression of osteoarthritis with IL-1 being labeled as the major cytokine in joint disease. Elevate ACS contains elevated levels of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) which work to block the destructive effects of IL-1. The solution is also enriched with anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors such as IL-1RA, IL-10, IL-4, and TGF-β, which all work to restore joint homeostasis.

Why Choose ECS Over Intra-Articular Corticosteroids?

ECS can be a safer alternative to intra-articular corticosteroids as steroids do not address the underlying pathogenesis of joint disease. There is concern that the analgesic properties of corticosteroids may improve clinical signs before pathology has resolved, which can lead to the masking of musculoskeletal injuries. This can be hazardous as the overuse of a painless joint may accelerate the deterioration of articular cartilage and injuries may become exacerbated during exercise.
